In our class we are writing a magazine article and we are using the 6 traits. We started with the first which are ideas. Then we moved to organisation. Organisation in writing helps us shape our ideas, it helps gives meaning to our ideas and it can help the reader move through your paper in a meaningful way.

I embarked on the journey of writing a magazine article about global warming and I started with ideas and I ended up having 3 different main ideas but now my journey continues with organisation, the back bone of writing. I started to organise my writing by putting my 3 main ideas (Human responsibility, Dying Mother Nature and Solution) in a fact chart. The fact chart was made up of a main idea and supporting facts to support my main ideas.

To have writing with lots of information, you need to ask questions and so I decided to ask questions about each main idea. For instance, I asked questions like ‘’are humans responsible for global warming?’’ And then on the fact chart under my main idea, I started to write into my supporting facts table, writing what I already knew about the main idea and also answers to my questions.

In my opinion, I believe that when writing a magazine article listening to other people’s opinion about your topic and adding it to your writing can help a lot because it tells the reader what different people think about that topic you’re writing about. So I chose to make survey on a Google doc, asking my friends questions that can help me know what their opinions are about my topic (global warming). I asked them questions like ‘’what are the ways you can help control global warming?’’ I got different answers; some answers involved slogans like REDUCE, REUSE, and RECYCLE. That was very useful because it helped me in writing a paragraph called solution and it also ignited some ideas that could help me research even more about my ideas.

Throughout this journey with the help of my teacher, I saw that using *transitions could help my writing a lot and my teacher emailed me a list of transitions like transitions for emphasis- above all, indeed, truly and so on. With the help of the list, I found it easy to add transitions in my sentences, but I had to think of the right transition to connect to very different ideas and I found that task quite amusing and challenging, because it gave me a chance to explore the different types of transitions and how they fit into my writing.

In conclusion, I learnt lots of thing about organisation like transitions and how putting your ideas into tables and keeping them in order helps shape your ideas. I also learnt that organisation is the backbone of writing and without it, you can’t pass a message to the reader and you can stop the reader from reading that book because of how the ideas are all mixed up.

*Transitions are connections or links that helps the reader understand how one idea or sentence relates to another.

James,

I am a student at The University of South Alabama, and I was assigned to read your blog. This is an amazingly good post. I am studying to be an English teacher, and I am looking at the Six-Trait writing format in one of my classes. Organization is, in my opinion, the second most important part of good writing behind ideas. Your really seem to be understanding how to organize and shape your arguments using facts and smooth transitions. You are well on your way to becoming a very good writer. Keep up the good work, its worth it. Good writers like you are in short supply.

Thanks! I agree with you that organisation is very important. I like to call it the backbone of writing. I’ll try my best to continue writing. Thanks again!

I am also a student at the University of South Alabama in EDM310. Staying organized will take you far in life. No one likes reading any material that is unorganized. I am a math major, and I try to keep everything extremely organized so that my professors can easily understand what I am trying to say. You have a great idea on how you like to organize things, and I am sure you will continue to do great in life! :)
